The Ocimum basilicum plant originates in India and is a member of Lamiaceae family. The plant is a small shrub that grows from 30-130 cm tall with leaves that are a lighter shade of green.

Basil is known today as the “King of Herbs”, it is an ancient herb that was found in the Egyptian Pyramids. Basil got its name from ‘Basileus’, a Greek word for ‘king’. During significant ceremonies, kings were often anointed with basil. In Asia, basil was often used to counteract venom from snakes and insects. Basil is also considered sacred in India; as it is planted around temples and graves. The Chinese utilized basil in their ancient medicinal practices; treating colds, flus, fevers, muscle aches and earaches. Long ago, basil was known for its bewitching scent. Italian women would don the oil and even set pots of basil outside their windows to draw in potential suitors.
