The Amyris balsamifera trees are bushy and a part of the Rutaceae family that grows to be about 2-8 meters tall. They grow wild in Haiti, but this plant can be found all over the world. Amyris originally got its name from the Greek word ‘Amyron’ (meaning intensely scented).

The Amyris plant got its name from the Greek word ‘Amyron’ (meaning intensely scented). The history of this plant is quite insignificant due to the multiple names given to it. Amyris was first called by other names such as balsam torchwood, candle wood, Buddha wood and West Indian sandalwood among others. The locals call it ‘candlewood’ because of its high oil content which makes it burn much like a candle. The wood has been used for furniture and as a torch by fishermen.
