The Illicium verum plant is a part of the Illiciaceae family and is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree that is native to some parts of Southern and Eastern Asia. The fruit is picked before ripening and then set in the sun to dry, allowing it to harden. The tree grows up to 8m (26 ft) and the fruit is known for its very specific star shape and its bold aroma.
Traditionally, Star Anise has been used in Chinese Medicine for approximately 3,000 years. In the late 1500’s, Star Anise was brought to Europe by an English sailor and soon became a staple in the trade route from China through Russia.
