The Myroxylon peruiferum is a tropical evergreen tree is a part of the Fabaceae family and is native to South America. This tree is tall and deciduous, growing up to 15 m and has a rounded, open, crown with white flowers and brown fruit pods that are 7-11 cm in size.

It is believed that the name Peru Balsam came from Peru, however; it actually received its name because it was imported to Europe by the Perurvian port of Callao in the 17th century
