Keeping Winter Critters at Bay

I’m always looking for ways to incorporate oils into my every day living for a healthier home. I have a routine application for my hair and skin and I have a food safe cleansing spray that I can add my favorite essential oils to which customizes the scent to my cleaning mood. But this week I began noticing that our closets needed a little attention (or perhaps a lot of attention!) So I decided to make a spray that would incorporate a wonderful scent as well as the usefulness of keeping moths away from our clothing.

Here’s why:

Moths can survive indoors: Even if it’s cold outside, your home’s warmth can provide a suitable environment for moths to thrive. They can hide in closets, attics, basements, and other areas where temperatures remain above freezing.

Larvae can continue feeding: Clothes moth larvae can continue to feed on fabrics like wool, fur, and feathers throughout the winter, even if the adult moths are less active.

Dormancy and survival: While moths may be less active in the winter, they can still survive in a dormant state until conditions become more favorable.

Here’s the recipe that I made for “De-mothing” our closet spaces.

  • 4 oz amber glass spray bottle
  • 2 oz of witch hazel
  • 25 drops of cedar wood essential oil
  • 25 drops of lavender essential oil
  • Topped off with distilled water

Shake well and spray into the floors and shelves, or lightly mist you clothes. Opening your closet will bring joy to your senses and deter the moths from making a snack of your favorite coat!

Other methods of prevention:

Use herbs or essential oils.

Moths, like many insects, simply can’t stand the smell of some of the most aromatic herbs, like  mint, lavender, bay leaves, cloves, rosemary, and thyme. Use this to your advantage to create natural moth repellents in your home. You could purchase these herbs dry and add them to sachets to hang in your closet, or soak cotton balls in essential oils in order to keep moths at bay.

If you live local and you’d like to host a Ridgeview Essential Evening, just invite me and few friends over and I’ll get the party started with an fun informative event introducing you and your friends to the countless uses of essential oils for beauty, home and health.
