A three day saga of a trapped feline began Monday evening when Fire Chief David Johnson received a call from Calhoun Control that a cat on High Street in Grantsville had climbed inside a chimney in the home of Thomas McVey, a traveling nurse, and couldn’t be coached out. For three days, at various times Johnson , Craig Gherke, Kayla Morford, and Jon Fleagle searched for the cat without success of getting it out. At times there was no sound of the cat and concern for its health, or that it had possibly escaped without notice was in the mind of the fire fighters.
The cat’s owner, Thomas McVey, was out of county working, so he gave Chief Johnson the key to his residence so he’d have access to find the cat when he had the time.
Wednesday evening, Lucas Morford and Jon Fleagle climbed on the roof of the home and discovered the cat was lodged in a space in the chimney in the upstairs part of the fire place and couldn’t get out. He was a hefty size cat. Multiple attempts were made to get it out but it eventually called for the removal of a few bricks from the fireplace to get the happy cat out.
The owner was notified and extremely grateful for the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Departments dedication to saving his feline friend. Chief Johnson said that was another for the books for a new rescue.
