Laughlin Makes plea for Dog Fosters in Calhoun

Patty Turner Laughlin Social Media post:

I’m making ANOTHER PLEA for dog fosters in Calhoun and any/all surrounding counties. Roane, Gilmer, Braxton, Jackson, Wirt, Wood, Kanawha and pretty much any county.

Just so people have even a remote idea of a SMALL part of what goes into rescue, this is a transport sheet. It doesn’t include the transport from Calhoun County to Marietta or the final transport to Wisconsin. These transporters are all volunteers. This is from the Transport Coordinator:

I have a run sheet for Monday

MONDAY 7/11/2022

Leg 1: Marietta, OH- Zanesville, OH
1 hr. 5 min. 71 miles
4:10pm- 5:15pm

Leg 2: Zanesville, OH- Columbus, OH
1 hr. (Rush hr traffic) 55 miles
5:25pm- 6:25pm

Leg 3: Columbus, OH- Dayton, OH
1 hr. 5 min. 73 miles
6:35pm-7:40pm

Leg 4: Dayton, OH- Richmond, IN
50 min. 46 miles
7:50pm- 8:40pm

Leg 5: Richmond, IN- Indianapolis, IN
1 hr. 15 min. 73 miles
8:50pm- 10:05pm

I’ll see how far I can get them to Indy

As I said, this does not include the transport from Calhoun to Marietta or the final transport to Wisconsin. One of these transporters had to spend one night in a hotel with this particular dog because her leg of transport was so long.

This also does not include vetting….shots, worming, heart worm testing (very expensive treatment if positive) Lyme disease testing (months of treatment if positive), spay/neuter and more.

There is also the set up and brake down of transport crates, thoroughly cleaning them, cleaning your vehicle since a lot of the dogs are extremely scared and nervous and get car sick or lose control of their bowels. Even though they are crated this sometimes gets into your car and your car has to be cleaned and disinfected.

After every dog I transport from Calhoun, I brake my crate down at the transfer spot (usually a parking lot in Marietta) clean it as thoroughly as possible with bleach spray. I then clean up any bodily fluids left in the car with paper towels and wipe the inside of the back of my car down with Clorox wipes and often times stop at a car wash on my way home and take my back mats out and spray them off.

I am fortunate enough right now to have three families, that had strays wonder into their yards, that are kind enough to keep them until they can be moved. I will be taking one of those next Thursday. Hopefully the other two will be able to go soon. By then there will be others that need a place to lay their head until they can move onto a loving home.

People do not realize the number of dumped, starving dogs that are in this county.

Surely there is someone who will offer to foster one of these poor lost souls until they can be moved to their new lives of love they’ve never known?
