Life in Prison on the Installment Plan

Eric Ray Jones with his Attorney, Betty Gregory appeared before Judge Anita Ashley for sentencing. Attorney Gregory argued on Jones’ behalf that he will be eligible for parole in March and that this conviction and sentencing should run concurrent allowing him to enter rehabilitation for substance abuse. Jones is currently charged in Calhoun for Possession less than 15 grams, Receiving Stolen Property, Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, Fleeing on Foot and Fleeing from an Officer.

Prosecuting Attorney Nigel Jeffries, representing the State noted that he was actually eligible for life in prison with over 20 criminal convictions. Jeffries said that he was a “30 year old on the fast track to doing life in prison on the installment plan. His recommendation for Jones was that he receive 1-5 to run consecutive with his current jail sentence.

Jones stated that he had never been to rehab and thought that it would be good to have the opportunity.

Judge Ashley did not agree, citing his 4 felonies, 11 misdemeanors, non compliance with the Division of Corrections and being on parole when he committed the current charges as the reason for her 1-5 years sentence to run consecutive on the charge of Conspiracy to Commit a felony, 150 days credit for time served and restitution to victim, Ronald Richards, in the the amount of $1,029.20.
