Panic Buying: Times and Priorities have changed

Panic purchasing emptied the Spencer Walmart shelves of basic and not so basic supplies on Saturday, January 15th, ahead of today’s storm. It’s almost inevitable when weather or other issues threaten to home bound people.  Stocking up with essentials at local grocery stores quickly create bare shelves, causing more panic for those who delayed their shopping.

Much has changed over the decades, or at least it appears to me to have changed, especially what we consider essential. Bread and milk have always been essential, but as my daughter Whitney discovered yesterday, her idea of essentials and many others were the same.

Frozen Snacks are Essential
Frozen Chicken is Essential
Frozen Pizza is Essential

Did we notice a theme there? It seems all things frozen are essential, which I find odd, because if the power goes out, so does the ability to keep your essentials!

And of course Bread is Essential

Another out of stock item was the coffee pods. Which I personally can understand why that’s viewed as essential. But it does appear that the ability to bake bread, make snacks or fix a meal without the use of frozen entrees is a thing of the past. In my daughter’s defense, that’s how I raised her.
