Calhoun Homes, Inc. Under New Management

Since May 26, 1969 Calhoun Homes, Inc. has been home for up to 24 families. It has not always had the greatest of reputation for property maintenance and was being investigated by Ridgeview News after complaints from area tenants about previous management’s questionable treatment of the tenants and failure to maintain property. But following the organizations recent hiring of new management things are looking brighter for the future of those who live in the non-profit, HUD funded, affordable housing units.

New Manager Robin Hughes who has just been hired to manage the facility has taken the bull by the horns with a proactive approach. She attended Monday’s Calhoun County Commission meeting and made her plea for the County’s help in restoring the property. Three units were completely unlivable and causing the loss of revenue. The County Commission awarded her over $10,000 for the repairs of those units and she plan to continue the work throughout the property.

Applications for housing are available at the Calhoun Homes office which must be filled out with a background check done to insure tenant safety. Approved HUD recipients have their rent paid from $700 to $1,200 depending on how many bedrooms, etc. Of the 24 apartments there are 3 apartments empty with tenants already waiting for the repairs to be done so they can move in.

Robin told the Ridgeview that her goals are to upgrade the windows and windowsills and to raise the bank account so they’ll no longer need assistance. Robin told us “This place should be able to stand on its own. There also seems to be a little division between some neighbors and I would like for everyone to be a close community.” She has plans for community activities in the center island of the facility and wants to keep the dialogue with those who live in Calhoun Homes open. Robin’s compassion and concern for her new job will make her an excellent asset to that community and Ridgeview News is grateful she is working to make a better life for those who live in Calhoun Homes.
