Charleston, WV – Today, Governor Patrick Morrisey joined West Teays Elementary and Chesapeake Elementary classrooms to support the national literacy initiative, Read Across America Week.
“A strong foundation in early literacy is key to success in life, said Governor Morrisey. “A student with a strong reading ability in the third-grade has improved future educational and behavioral outcomes. Thank you to educators across the state who are ensuring the next generation of West Virginians can achieve their full potential.”
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, measures 4th and 8th grade reading, science, and math ability. In recently released 2024 scores, West Virginia students showed a slight improvement in 4th grade reading, but still fell below the national average.
Governor Morrisey is prioritizing educational attainment in the Mountain State – working with the Department of Education to institute initiatives that will drive up student outcomes, improve scores on key academic benchmarks, and provide flexibility and educational choice to parents.
