Calhoun Circuit Court Has Had A Packed Docket this Week

Judge Anita Harold Ashley has had multiple hearings and continuances along with a two day jury trial on George Nicolas Parsons (full story to follow on the trial). It’s been difficult to post but I hope this evening to catch everyone up on the latest news in the Criminal Justice system as well as other news and events.

Terry Wesley Peggs, Jr. Appeared via telecom on Tuesday with his Attorney, Calvin Honaker in person, who requested a reduction in bond. The defendant’s bond, which was set at $15,000  was too high for the defendant to cover, so the attorney argued for it to be reduced to a more affordable $5,000. Mr. Peggs had been in contact with a bail bondsman and had the 10% required for the lower amount.

Judge Anita Ashley asked Prosecutor Nigel Jeffries to respond on the request, at which time Jeffries argued that Peggs had been convicted of a violent crime and had additional criminal history. He currently faces three counts of Felony prohibited person, meaning that he was prohibited, and caught carrying firearms. However, the Prosecutor did believe their could be some leniency on the bond because Peggs has yet to be indicted and probably would not be until the next term of court. Because of that statement the Judge met them in the middle with a bond reduction to $10,000. Peggs’ continued to argue following the Judge’s decision stating, that his wife was pregnant and due next week and he could not make the $10,000 bond to allow him to be there for the delivery. No changes were made.
