If you haven’t been to the Calhoun County Park recently, it would be worth your drive to check out the changes and improvements to the park property and structures. The Calhoun County Park is operated by volunteers, with the exception of assistance by Courthouse Maintenance for a few hours a month, and housekeeping on the cabin when guests stay. But you’d never know it when you see the great many things that accomplished there for the community’s enjoyment.

Ridgeview stopped by on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025 to get some pictures of the park, and lo and behold, there were three volunteers, Roger Jarvis, Linda Jarvis and Kathy Wood working on the inside of the barn to get it ready for upcoming events. The barn received interiors updates and and will have beautiful new flooring making it an extremely nice venue! One of the first events will be the April Fool’s Day Blue grass event on April 5th, hosted by Bruce Jones and Rick Falls. The event drew in people from all across the United States last year and it’s hoped that they’ll pack them in once again for the all day Jam.

Across the park you’ll notice the newly installed disc golf games. Disc golf, also known as frisbee golf, is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target, using rules similar to golf. The sport is usually played on a course with 9 or 18 holes, each consisting of a teeing area and target (basket). Players complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee pad or tee area toward a basket, throwing again from where the previous throw came to rest, until the disc comes to rest in the designated basket. Disc golf targets are composed of a metal basket supported by a center pole, with chains hanging from an upper band. They are designed to catch the incoming discs, which then fall into the basket.
Usually, the number of throws a player uses to reach each basket is tallied (most often in relation to par), and players seek to complete each hole in the lowest number of total throws. Par is considered to be the number of strokes a skilled player is expected to make for a given hole or a group of holes (usually 9 or 18). The game is played in about 40 countries, and as of 2023, there are 107,853 active members of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) worldwide. According to the UDisc course directory, there are over 15,000 disc golf courses, with roughly 90% being accessible for free.

The Calhoun County Park Stage will be the location of many events of the spring and summer. The hillside sloping in front of it makes a perfect spot to bring seating and enjoy the great entertainment that’s going to be offered.
Just a few are listed below on the park flyer, including a book signing event at the Calhoun County Library with much loved teacher and local author Kathy Wood.

Other projects in the works around the field are the youth league base ball fields that have been redone with field work, seeding and fencing coming in very soon.

Dark toned laminate flooring will soon be installed on the floors of the upstairs event room adding more beauty.
Hiking trails, the Historial Village, Cabin rental, tent and camper spaces with hookups and star gazing events make the Calhoun County Park a great attraction to those wanting a place to get away from world and enjoy the beauty that Calhoun County has to offer.
