Calhoun Gilmer Career Center Introduces Students to Emergency Services

Mr. Michael Jackson, Criminal Justice Instructor at Calhoun Gilmer Career Center has been conducting an Emergency Service Summer Camp Program. Throughout the week the Middle and High School students have been introduced to the various departments, tactics and skills of Emergency Services including: Fire Suppression, Self Rescue, Hose Maze, Baseline Vitals, K-9 Crews (Cadavar Dogs and Search and Rescue)

Students were permitted and encouraged to participate in many of the activities and to consider local volunteerism with area Emergency Serivces such as the Fire Departments who allow youth to become Junior Firefighters at the age of 16 with limited participation in actual fire scenes.

CJ Myers of the Calhoun Sheriff Department spoke on Law Enforcement during the afternoon classes today, using his K-9 Belgian Malinois, Siri, and the K-9 Search and Rescue of West Virginia team.

Today’s exercise involved the extrication exhibit with the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department. Chief David Johnson had 5 crew members, C.J. Myers, Lucas Moreford, Kayla Moreford, Sierra Myers and John Fleagle demonstrating the method of patient extrication. A van donated by Westfall’s Wrecker Service was used (and destroyed) to demonstrate the procedures Fire Fighters use to safely remove accident victims. Thomas Jackson of the Gassaway Volunteer Fire Department also helped in today’s exercise.

Youth or adults interested in serving with their local Fire Stations in Calhoun should stop by Grantsville, Arnoldsburg or West Fork Stations on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. and speak with the officers regarding the rules for their particular department.
