Calhoun Middle Baseball battled for the win against Clay Middle on Monday. History being made with Calhoun Middle Schools first ever home runs – 1 in the park by Chase Schoolcraft, 1 out of park by Rome Riddle.
Calhoun took an early lead until errors in the third inning allowed Clay to tie, then take the lead. In the first inning Brennen Carpenter took a base on ball, Garrett Carpenter sent a pitch flying for a double, scoring B. Carpenter. The second inning was a battle of pitchers, Reese Schoolcraft for the Red Devils, J. Elliott for Clay. The top of the third brought an in the park home run for Chase Schoolcraft bringing the score to 2-0. The bottom of the third was riddled with errors allowing Clay to take the lead 2-3. The top of the fourth led with a walk for Charter Cottrell who steals second and third during Garrett Carpenters at bat. Chase Schoolcraft hits a ground ball double scoring Cottrell, Chace Toney ground out, scoring C. Schoolcraft. Devils lead 4-3 but falls short stopping Clay from scoring, the fourth ends with a 4-5 score.
Reese Schoolcraft starts the 5th inning with a single, Orion Swearingen reaches first on fielding error scoring R. Schoolcraft. Cottrell triples on a hard hit to center field, scoring Swearingen. G. Carpenter triples on a fly ball to center field scoring Cottrell. C. Schoolcraft reaches first on fielding error, steals to third. Inning ends with the Red Devils up 8-5. In the 6th inning R. Schoolcraft steals home. Clay tries to get some momentum going but is unable to leaving their team trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the 6th.
The 7th inning is when Calhoun turned up the heat. Cottrell leads the batting order with a single fly ball to center followed by G. Carpenter with a double – scoring Cottrell. C. Schoolcraft hits a triple to left field scoring G. Carpenter. C. Schoolcraft Riddle and Morris all steal home
The HIGHLIGHT of the 7th comes from Rome Riddle who smokes the ball out of the park on the left field side.
The Devils win with a score of 21-7 after scoring 12 runs in the 7th.
Pitching for the Devils were Reese Schoolcraft & Chase Schoolcraft. R. Schoolcraft pitched 5 innings, throwing 90 pitches, 68 strikes, 6 strikeouts. C. Schoolcraft pitched 2 innings, throwing 52 pitches, 30 strikes, 5 strikeouts.
