Circa 1934 – Who’s the Rebel?

Group of students, circa 1934. Donald Morris and Joe Haught last two on right next to last row, Fred Barnes, 3rd row, second from left, Russell Knotts behind Barnes.

A photograph from the WV State Archive website, contributed by Jane Carpenter whose father, Donald Morris is in the photograph, as well as a few other historical characters in the community that I had the privilege of meeting. One of my favorite characters in life was Fred Barns. He was a Calhoun High School teacher and a State Farm Insurance Agent but more than that he was a great encourager. You did not meet him on the street without leaving in a better humor for the conversation. I have no doubt in my mind that he would approve of the character of our now State Farm Agent, Tim Moore, he too encourages my soul.

If you can name any of the others in this photograph, please comment on the social media post or in the website comment area.

I would especially like to know who the rebel lady is in the 5th position from the left on the second row. She is turned profile in what appears to be a deliberate act from all the other forward facing students. It cracked me up, wondering why she would do it?
