A Tribute to the Valiant Men and Women of Calhoun County

In search of discovering the names of over 1,100 men and women who have served at various times in various branches and wars, my appreciation for the veterans as well as their families grew mightily. My understanding for their contribution to my freedom hit home as I read the names and a few bits of the story of men and women who were willing to lay their lives down for what they believed in and to defend the soil on which they stood, or travel afar to defend the Nation as a whole.

In 1980, shortly after David Johnson and I got married, my Uncle, Casto “Doc” Hardway committed suicide. As I understand it from family, he never got over the horrors of captivity during World War II and tried to drown the memories that haunted him, unsuccessfully.

Other than a few war stories as a child, I did not grow up with a military mindset. But as I grew older, Veterans began to cross my path and their stories added to the ones I had heard as a child.  My patriotism grew because they shared the history of their contribution. I witnessed unresolved anguish and anger in some, pride in others, but for most, if not all, a sense of responsibility to take care of all their people, not just the ones they knew.

I fear it’s what’s missing in America today. The Nation is fractured into pronouns that used to be “us.” We the people. But now it’s groups, opinions and entitlement. Nobody “has” to do anything that they don’t want to do.

But this morning I am thinking about all those names on the list, who didn’t do it because they had to, but they went to defend our Nation because they wanted to. And even though some likely didn’t want to go, they went because they were called.

Veterans Day is more than a time of remembrance, it’s also a time of realization. We’ve come along way, but I wouldn’t call it progress. I hope that for Veterans Day 2023, we take the time to thank those in our lives who have served and to honor them with words of encouragement. And then, remember to lift up those who continue to serve a very ungrateful Nation, and try to do a better job at helping this next generation to understand the price that was paid by the previous generations.

Ridgeview News would like to thank every single veteran for their contribution to the freedom we’ve gotten far to used to. Calhoun County is filled with good and honorable people who will give you the shirt off their backs or the food off their table. They are steeped in traditions and hold the Constitution of the United States up as fact, not fiction. Those families have willingly gone into the service during war times and during times of peace because they were raised to love America. Thank you!

And to the young people, sitting on the brink of the future, stand strong in where you come from. We have a lot to be proud of!

This list will be a continuing update. I literally worked on it for over a week, and often times grew weary which may have created errors or accidental omissions. Please feel free to notify me of any corrections or additions to the list.

4 Replies to “A Tribute to the Valiant Men and Women of Calhoun County

  1. I guess my service is not considered, What is it, can i not get recognition for anything in this county, Darrell E. Blake Jr 5 1/2 years of service U.S. Army. I also was the first person to apply for Sheriff, not Graham Knight, don’t get me wrong I am happy that he is Sheriff and Support Graham 100%. I also own my own small business here in Calhoun County.

    1. Mr. Blake, thank you for your service. You have been added to the veterans list to be among the 1000+ names of those who have served.
