Calhoun County, WV – Calhoun Middle/High School Summer Camp is proud to partner with local businesses and government agencies for adventures in “The Game of Life.” Students visited Calhoun Banks, the County Court House, and Minnie Hamilton Health System to understand how each of the organizations impact our community and directly affect daily lives.
Tuesday, July 5th – The leadership of Calhoun Banks walked students through the process of managing monthly net income by assigning them jobs and families then budgeting vehicles, housing, utilities, groceries, gas, insurance, etc. The value of the dollar became quite clear as a few of these bright-eyed teens went in the red with their budget. Participants learned the reality of what it takes to meet their future needs while building relationships with employees of Calhoun Banks.
Wednesday, July 6th – County Clerk Jean Simers organized a tour of her office, Assessor Jason Nettles’ Office, Sheriff Warren Basnett’s Office, and a surprise visit with Judge Ashley and many of those involved in her court. Commissioner Michael Hicks was also introduced to our potential leaders. Students were amazed as they explored the records vault, discovered how to pay their future vehicle registration with Trevia Fulks, realized the importance of property taxes, and practiced reading a ballot while voting on a real machine. Most importantly, students witnessed multiple government offices working together to make their community run.
Thursday, July 7th – CEO Stephen Whited invited students into the inner workings of Minnie Hamilton Health System. COO Eric Ritchie and Hannah Moore explained the business structure, the many services provided, and career opportunities. Students were escorted through the halls and explored several departments from the laundry services to physical therapy. Mr. Ritchie thrilled middle-schoolers when he promised to buy them lunch on the first day of their future job at Minnie Hamilton Health System.
The ”Game of Life” Summer Camp was a huge success as community partners engaged students with vital information that will assist them as the transition into adults and future leaders of Calhoun County.
