Commissioner’s Hold Thursday Meeting for Festival Funding

The Calhoun County Commission convened Thursday evening, May 29th, at 6:00 pm in the small courtroom. Commissioners Lupardus and McCumbers were present, and Commission President Arthur joined via phone. County Administrator Jennifer Randolph was also in attendance.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer, Commissioner Lupardus officially called the meeting to order at 6:04 pm.

Under the Delegations segment, Larry Whited brought to the commission’s  attention the need to clean the benches and front steps of the courthouse prior to the opening day of the Wood Festival.

Gaylord Ford raised the issue of stray dogs roaming freely in Grantsville and emphasized the need for action, expressing hope that it would be addressed after the town election.

Moving to New Business, the commission considered funding requests for both the Molasses Festival and the Wood Festival. The Molasses Festival was allocated $8,000. The Wood Festival received an additional $6,800. $1,200 was previously approved for their electricity, bringing their total funding to $8,000. The funds for both festivals will be sourced from the Parks and Recreation Budget, which currently holds a balance of $185,202.16. All three Commissioners expressed their appreciation for the dedicated volunteers who contribute to the success of both festivals each year, recognizing their vital role in the community.

The Commissioners acknowledged the necessity of installing a roof over the handicap entrance to the courthouse to provide shelter from inclement weather for individuals waiting to be buzzed in. The commission will obtain quotes from their list of approved contractors for this project.

The commission extended their gratitude to County Administrator Jennifer Randolph for her efforts in scheduling the necessary plumbing and electrical repairs at the courthouse. Ms. Randolph prioritized ensuring restroom availability for attendees of the upcoming Wood Festival. Further estimates are being obtained for plumbing work needed in the handicap restroom and other areas of the courthouse.

Finally, the Commissioners signed letters urging support from elected officials for the potential job creation and economic growth associated with American Medicines Company’s plan to establish a pharmaceutical company in the area. This venture is projected to create approximately 350 jobs with an average salary of $110,000, representing an estimated $38.5 million in annual salaries that would significantly benefit local businesses and the overall economy.
