Rev. Kevin Gillespie filled his regular appointment at the Burning Springs M. E. Church & served Holy Communion.
The Creston Veteran’s Day event will be held on Sunday, November 5 at 2 P. M. at the Creston Community Building. All veterans and their families are urged to attend. There will be speakers and refreshments after the program. The freedom we all enjoy is because valiant soldiers, sailors & marines fought to form and protect our nation. Now with war in both Europe and the near east and in invasion through our southern border it is critical to emphasize national defense and honor those who have served in the past or who are now on the front lines. Betty Bish who is heading up the prep for the program fell and is now using a walker so she needs help preparing for the program. Friday November 3 at the Community Building is when help will be needed. Call Barb at 304-275-0006 for details.
Saturday night’s Creston Halloween party was a rousing success. Even King Kong showed up for the gala event that was directed by Her Honor Elizabeth Mayor Bobbi Moore who was the pink lady. There were two huge groups of contestants in the mask competition, the 3 – 6 age group and the adult contest. There was pumpkin carving, ghost story telling, scary and very scary hay rides, a campfire, games & finger foods along with a treat bag for each of the younger folks. Connie Mollohan did a superb job as the very scary clown who set the scary pace for the event. The community would like to thank all who came, those who worked to decorate, fixed the food, did the rides, supplied the candy, etc. There was even an inflatable over size can of beer at the otherwise non alcoholic event.
Mr. & Mrs. Thomas deVries are the parents of a new baby girl who was welcomed by big brother Matthias.
Helen Bayless, age 87 of Vienna, passed away. She was the daughter of Elzie (Elgie) & Blanche Williams Lockhart who lived on Ground Hog. During the drought in the 1930s [when real record temperatures were recorded] Elzie took his oxcart every other day and came to the West Fork to haul water and cut hog weeds for his swine. Some have no idea what hard times really can be.
Early Thursday morning on the way to a medical appointment Alvin Engelke got his “trophy buck” with his wife’s car. Luckily the chariot was still drivable so the appointment was made. It was later learned that someone came along and cut off the head. “Look at the big rack I shot”. Then, a short time later someone else took the body of the un lucky cervid so, at least, the meat did not go to waste. The estimate on the chariot is somewhere north of $7,300.
Local residents have been having to deal with the annual invasion of the government’s Asiatic beetles which look like ladybugs but are not. The Clintons had a donor who was selling the pests to “control the aphids on pecan trees”. Earlier folks had been dealing with the government stink bugs.
Last week it was reported that Creston [and Roane County ] lost their member of the House of Delegates and folks were urged to apply to get on the list of 3 names that would be sent to the governor. Both Wirt & Roane counties had two members of the District 15 delegate committee and on Tuesday the group was to meet to send the names to ” Big Jim”. One Wirt County woman tried to apply but the state party shut down the computer and then, in violation of the W. Va. Code, decided that the committee didn’t need to meet and that the state committee would send the names to the governor. The state folks said “party rules” but a prior court had ruled that the state party rules would have to comply with the West Virginia Code. As matters now stand, Wirt County was completely cut out of the process.
Speaking of the governor he has a big court hearing on his finances November 15 at Martinsville, Virgina with another hearing November. 16 at Abington, Virginia. It is understood that the news media will cover the events and that one bank is actively looking for a buyer for a famous hotel.
The hoopla continues over the proposed hydrogen hub and the $billion in tax payer funds for various companies. It is now reported that hydrogen will be produced at the duPont facilities at Washington Bottom and at Belle. Other goodies are to be strung about here & there to shore up support for the Maserati driving fellow who lives on a yacht, etc. If matters seem too good to be true, then, all too often, well, we know the rest. Some folks have noted that the taxpayer funds from the “Inflation Reduction Act” [Green New Deal} are being directed to Chinese & Russian companies. Who’d a thunk it?
Rain has brought down large amounts of leaves but still there are beautiful vistas with spectacular fall color. Speaking of weather & such the government of Norway has now concluded that the increase in CO2 has had no impact on the temperature of the planet in spike of the shrieks of the phonies who want to use climate to make us all slaves to their global governance.
Local residents attended the Wirt County Annual Farm Bureau meeting at Camp Barbe.
The comely Kim Mowrey passed her test relating to her employment at the FBI center in Clarksburg. West Virginia. She spent the weekend visiting her mother.
The DUG Appalachia Conference & Exhibition will be held November 29 & 30 at Pittsburgh with an emphasis on the importance of the Marcellus & Utica shales on American energy independence and economic growth, etc. All the players will be there and those whose business is involved with such should attend. If West Virginia had any government leadership folks from the legislature and governor’s office would be there taking copious notes but, it would seem that “our leaders” have sold out to out of state interests so they will be told what they “need to know”. Those who would push forced pooling leases on world class oil & gas certainly do not have the interests of West Virginia in mind.
The price of local Pennsylvania grade crude rose to $84.54/bbl. with condensate fetching $66.54/bbl. with Marcellus & Utica light brnging $75.54 and medium $84.54/bbl.
