Parkersburg, W.Va. – Today, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the signing of legislation to increase law enforcement presence in schools while streamlining the officer certification process. This new law allows law enforcement officers to satisfy certain training requirements on school grounds, strengthening school safety and encouraging officers to complete ongoing education in their local communities.
“West Virginia has some of the best law enforcement officers in the country, and we’re going to do everything we can to support them,” said Governor Morrisey. “This new law not only supports law enforcement officers as they fulfill their training requirements, but it also prioritizes added safety for students and teachers.
House Bill 2802 includes certain provisions for substitution of training credit hours for officers engaging in on-site participation in school safety programs.
Governor Morrisey was joined by legislators, local officials, students, and teachers at Gihon Elementary School in Parkersburg to celebrate the passage of the new law. House Bill 2802 was officially signed into law on April 25, 2025 and goes into effect on July 10, 2025.
