GOVERNOR PATRICK MORRISEY PROMOTES LEGISLATION TO HELP VETERANS BECOME TEACHERS

Hedgesville, W.Va. – Today, Governor Patrick Morrisey held an event to promote recently-signed legislation to establish a Troops-to-Teachers program in West Virginia. The Governor was joined by students, lawmakers, supporters, and two teachers who previously served in the armed forces at Hedgesville Middle School for the ceremonial signing of Senate Bill 765

“Quality teachers are foundational to educational success, and our veterans can bring their unique background and experiences to educate the next generation of West Virginians,” said Governor Morrisey. “Troops-to-Teachers is a successful program that will benefit both our students and our veteran community.”

“As a WV National Guard Green Beret and a father, I’ve seen firsthand the value of discipline, leadership, and mentorship,” said Senator Tom Willis. “Veterans are uniquely suited to bring those qualities into our classrooms — to lead, inspire, and shape the next generation. The Troops to Teachers Act creates a fast, fair, and effective pathway for military veterans to become certified teachers in West Virginia without the need for a teaching degree. With this pro-veteran legislation, we are building stronger classrooms, stronger communities, and a stronger West Virginia.”

Troops-to-Teachers is a nationwide program that helps service members and veterans navigate the teacher certification process and allows them to get classroom experience while they complete necessary requirements to become employed as K-12 teachers.
