Two Saturday’s in a row have found Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department battling a brush fire on Route 5 on Hog Knob Hill. Power lines have caused the fire that burned minimal ground but caused concerns for those who live near by.
Prior to the brush fire several trees were blown down and construction signs moved. The tree pictured above and below was located across the road from Jim McCormick’s home where the tree fell on a barn that has leaned for many years.
Power outages and high winds continue with the following warning remaining for a short time.
HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected. * WHERE...Portions of southwest Virginia and central, northeast, northern, southeast and southern West Virginia. * WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Drier air and strong winds mixing down to the surface will increase the fire threat through this afternoon and evening. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
