William Greathouse, age 57, of Mt. Zion, WV was convicted on February 2, 2023 in Calhoun County Circuit Court of Sexual Abuse by a Parent/Custodian.
Appearing before Judge Anita Harold Ashley, Greathouse’s attorney Daniel Minardi asked that his pre-sentence investigation and psychological reports be considered with regards to the determination of sentence. He further stated that because Greathouse had no prior criminal history, no prior sexual offenses, had voluntarily sought mental health treatment in the past and has not blamed the victim, taking full responsibility of his actions that he would be a good candidate for home confinement.
Prosecuting Attorney Nigel Jeffries argued on behalf of the State that there are some crimes so outrageous, such as crimes against children, and being that even the defendants own statements show that he traumatized the victim to the point of probably needing therapy; home confinement shouldn’t be a consideration. Jeffries noted that defendant had said that the crime occurred because he was watching a movie and got “caught up in it.” The State’s recommendation was the maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years and 50 years supervision upon release.
Greathouse had nothing to say on his own behalf.
In her final sentencing Judge Ashley agreed with the State telling Greathouse that there was a 5 year old victim that will likely require counseling for their entire life. She sentenced him to 10 to 20 years in the penitentiary, he will have to register as a sex offender for life and be subject to 50 years of extended supervised release. He was also given credit for 177 days of time served.
