Mother’s day is one of the claims to fame for the State of West Virginia having been first declared an established holiday in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna Jarvis, who organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship and celebration service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, WV began the celebration in reverence to Mother’s. She later expressed her regret, having never desired the holiday to become so commercialized. In response, Constance Adelaide Smith successfully began the Holiday “Mothering Sunday” which honors a broader definition of motherhood in many other parts of the world.
Although the date varies by country, Mother’s Day is observed in 40 Countries.
