A trip to the Emergency Room last night to visit a brother in law in the E.R. (who had already been released) and the discovery of a friend in the ER, awaiting transport, alerted me to the issue of too few beds available in the larger facilities that local hospitals transfer more serious patients to. According to Minnie Hamilton Health Care System, it is standard protocol to call Parkersburg (Camden Clark) Morgantown, (Ruby) and Charleston (CMAC) for patients needing care not provided at Minnie Hamilton Health System, to see if they have a bed available. The decision to transfer the patient is based on the benefits of care available at another facility against the potential risks involved. Call’s Sunday evening showed that there were over 200 patients awaiting transfer due to the unavailability of beds. Not an uncommon problem in rural West Virginia medicine.
Although the bed shortage cause is unknown, a recent rise in Covid cases likely isn’t helping the matter. According to WVDHHR website Covid cases are once again on the rise.
