
Ira Michael “Mike” Sponaugle, 55 of Cedarville, WV; went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, WV; following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on September 27, 1969 in Gassaway, WV; son of David and Rosalee (Smith) Sponaugle.
Mike was a graduate of Gilmer County High School class of 1987. He also graduated from Glenville State College with a degree in business. Mike was a hard worker all his life but spent most of his working years as a landman in the oil and gas industry. In his spare time, Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his family and friends, and spoiling his two granddaughters who were the light of his life.
Mike attended church for the last several years at the Little Kanawha independence Church in Burnsville and he was also a loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Dallas Cowboys, and the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team.
On July 22, 1995 he was united in marriage to his loving wife Leah (McNemar) Sponaugle who survives at their home in Cedarville.
Surviving are two children, daughter Jamie Randolph (Nathan) of Glenville, WV; and son Travis Beall (Rosie) of Morgantown, WV. 2 granddaughters Claire Randolph and Lilliun Beall who Mike referred to as “Claire Bear” and “Lilli Bug”. Mother Rosalee Sponaugle of Cedarville, WV and mother-in-law Mayme McNemar of Glenville, WV. A sister Izetta Brannon (Joe) of Cedarville, WV and brother Zandel Sponaugle of Elkins, WV. A special nephew Mark Sponaugle (Cheyenne), great-niece, Bailey, niece Laura Brannon who was his birthday twin, nephew David Brannon, and niece Zanna Brady (AJ). Also surviving are a host of family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Mike is preceded in death by his father, David Sponaugle and special uncle George Sponaugle.
Mike’s family would like to thank the staff at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital for the outstanding care they provided in his final weeks of life and for the love they extended to the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Cancer Fund in Glenville.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 5:00 PM; Sunday, September 14, 2025 with Pastor Tim Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedarville Cemeteery in Cedarville, WV. Friends will be received from 2:00 – 5:00 PM; Sunday at the mortuary in Glenville.
