Mary Jo Moyers, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and dedicated servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the age of 90. She was surrounded by the love of her daughters as she went home to be with her Lord and Savior.
Born on March 31, 1935, in Gilmer County, Mary Jo was the daughter of the late Walter P. and May Floyd Shiflet. She was a proud graduate and salutatorian of the 1952 class of Sand Fork High School. Her commitment to education led her to obtain a teaching certificate from Glenville State College, after which she dedicated several years to teaching in one-room schoolhouses in Braxton and Jackson Counties.
After raising her children, Mary Jo returned to her professional life, earning a degree in Dietary Management. She worked for many years at Americare Glenville until her retirement.
A woman of profound faith, Mary Jo was a lifelong and active member of Dusk Camp Baptist Church. Her service to the church was extensive; she held roles as Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, and Teacher.
Mary Jo was widely known for her exceptional homemaking skills. An immaculate housekeeper and a truly gifted cook, she found joy in nourishing those she loved. Her generous spirit shone through her actions, whether cooking large meals for her entire family and friends, providing care for those recovering from illnesses, or famously cooking post-game meals for the Lady Pioneer basketball teams for many years. Her family and her faith were the cornerstones of her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her surviving daughters, Karen (John) Elkin and Sandra (Rodney) Pettit, both of Sand Fork; her grandson, Stephen Shinn of Sutton; her granddaughter, Sydney Pettit of Washington D.C.; and one great-granddaughter, Courtney Shinn of Clarksburg.
Mary Jo is also survived by her cherished sister, Maxine Cole Rastle, with whom she loved spending time; her niece, Julia Stewart, whom she loved like another daughter; sister-in-law Brenda (Vaughn) Stump; and brother-in-law Brant Moyers, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bailey Moyers, and her daughter, Eva Lynn. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Orlis Shiflet, Manoka (Kay) Kennedy, Peggy Minigh, Pat Shiflet, and an infant sister, Margarie Karen.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary Jo’s life is being planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to either the Dusk Camp Baptist Church, 5139 Dusk Camp RD, Sand Fork, WV 26430, or the Glenville State University Foundation, 200 High Street, Glenville, WV 26351.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., for their support and compassionate guidance during this difficult time.
