Mountaineer Food Bank (MFB) located in Gassaway, WV provides food and other household items to the emergency food network in 48 counties including programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, backpack programs, senior programs and mobile pantries. The Family Resource Network of Grantsville is hosts and promotes the effort for Calhoun County.
MFB works with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture to distribute USDA commodities in 43 counties in West Virginia, almost 3.5 million pounds annually. The products are generally staple items such as green beans, corn, canned fruit, juices and proteins such as meat or peanut butter.
As a Feeding America food bank, MFB is able to bring in donations from donors across the country by the truckload to distribute into West Virginia. Their partnership allows them work with retail stores such as Walmart and Kroger in local communities to reduce food waste and provide much needed produce and dairy to local families, of which there were 287 served last month in Calhoun.
The food give aways are general every other month, but due to February being a make up day for the weather delayed January event, another event will be held at the City Park on March 11, 2022.
