Even though their fearless leader, Crystal Mersh, is away in Atlanta working on the logistics and historical side of the business, The 1982 Foundation staff and volunteers continue to make progress back home.
Crystal reported that they had a great meeting with the architectural/construction team. The team is making great progress with the Historic Registry submission. The State Historic Preservation Office loves the building and are working cooperatively with them and with the National Parks Service to review the submission. The 1982 Foundation has submitted part one and are working on the Nomination for the National Registry. The architects are working on SD (schematic designs for both buildings) and then will move to DD (detailed design) drawings for construction. Crystal said ”You wouldn’t believe how many moving parts, forms, meetings and people are involved in such an endeavor if I told you; therefore I will spare you the details. Let’s just say it is shocking! But if this results in the first historic building in Calhoun to be placed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings, then it will be worth it. We are all proud of our ol’ gal and she deserves this designation to protect her in the future.”
In preparation for outdoor events the press box has now became an anchor for a new stage on the Wayne Underwood Field, and a new sign has gone up at the entrance of the property. (pictured below)
Another building scheduled for a make over is the Calhoun Realty building on the corner of Main and Market. (Pictured below with the paint applied digitally.
The Fall Festival was rescheduled for the 22nd of October due to rain and will provide the community an opportunity to come together and celebrate all things new around the property of Calhoun’s grand ol’ gal. An article will run soon with all of the events planned for the day.
The future is always in the forefront of Crystal’s mind and a future event not so far away is a Christmas Event for the community children ringing with yesteryear excitement. The stage of the High School gym will be transformed into a FAO Swharz or Hamley’s (Houner style) for children to select a gift from a variety of options to include toys, sports, hunting, fishing educational and more! This is a sizable effort and all volunteers are needed on deck with a few new one’s coming along for the joy of it.
There will need to be a Design team: to create the design and to develop/draw the pieces that need to be made and assembled. Like set design.
Construction: to cut out and build individual parts of the set therefore we will need folks for basic woodworking, painting, building, etc. Set creation.
Assembly: to put together the final set
Decorators: to do the final touches
A planning meeting on this event will be scheduled soon after the fall festival.
