Letter from Mrs. Loretta Propst
Couple weeks ago, there was a notice in the Calhoun Chronicle for an organizational meeting of a Republican Club or GOP. I know we have had for a few years a Committee Chairman, Gaylen Duskey. He has done much of the work alone which is unfortunate in a county the size of Calhoun. I've been embarrassed that we are not working together to increase the visibility and activity of the Republican Party for our County and our State. Where did my interest in politics begin? Around the dinner table, on election night, television communication of the party platforms, electoral speeches, laws being changed that violated the tenets of my faith, but the most important person to influence me was Orvan Todd Hathaway, my dad. He was active with the Republican party and served as a Calhoun Committee Chairman. The Party in our county would have the Lincoln Day Dinner, a time to educate, fellowship, and have fun together of those who were politically like-minded. Is the Republican Party active in registering new voters who have moved to our area? Do we post state and national signs? Do we provide transportation for those who may need rides to the polls to cast their vote? Do we seriously research the backgrounds of those running for office and what they might bring to the office, and how they will represent us, if elected? These are a few of the reasons I attended the first organizational meeting. I was the only Calhoun Co. native in attendance. This was further disappointment to me. I am appreciative that folk from New Jersey, Missouri, California, were there. They transplanted to our beautiful area and noticed that the organizational concerns were missing and opportunities to grow the Republican numbers in our area are lacking. It is no ONE PERSON'S fault, it is all of our failures to grow our party and representation. The next meeting will be held at Mom's Place in Grantsville at 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 31st. It would be wonderful to see more local participants who ' are interested in the GOP becoming more active in our area. Loretta Propst
