Stoops Arrested for False Information and Driving without a License

In the early morning hours of August 1, 2025, Deputy H.M. Stephens was on Wolf Run investigating a case of electronic harassment/stalking directed at a female victim. While speaking to the victim, her friend arrived in a vehicle, with her boyfriend Johnathan Stoops driving. Both individuals were witnesses to the suspected stalking behavior and gave Deputy Stephens statements.

When the Deputy asked Mr. Stoops for his information, he stated that his last name was spelled S-T-E-W-P-S. Over a month later, on 09/24/2025, Deputy Stephens discovered that Mr. Stoops had a capias warrant issued on 09/11/2025 for failure to appear in a 2024 Kanawha County case. Upon viewing the case details, Deputy Stephens discovered that he had given her a false spelling of his name.

She obtained a photograph from his ID card and verified that it was indeed the same person. In further investigation the Deputy found Mr. Stoops’ Facebook account, with username “John Stoops.” Upon running his IDN, she was advised by Charleston Dispatch that there is no driver’s license on record for Mr. Stoops. These crimes occurred within the geographical boundaries of Calhoun County, WV.

Johnathan Matthew Stoops was arrested for “making a false statement and driving without a license” in case number 25-M07M-00254. A personal recognizance bond of $2,500.00 is listed as being posted on September 29th, 2025, but he as yet is in the WV Central Regional Jail on a Kanawha County Capias set with a cash only $1,500. He has a pretrial hearing November 4th, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. in the court of Magistrate Lora Davis.
