The Grand Ol’ Lady is Getting the Attention She Deserves

1982 Foundation President Crystal Mersh has kept the ball rolling from the battle for the Wayne Underwood Field, Multiple shelters, Concert Stage, Recovery Center, Swimming Pool, and now the much beloved Grand ‘Ol Lady herself, Calhoun County High School. There was quite a delay after the initial demolition work and cleanup was completed due to the application for the building to be added to the Register of Historic Buildings. The application was approved, and she is now on that register. After some preliminary onsite evaluation of the work to be completed, employees of the demolition contractor arrived on scene Tuesday and began bringing necessary equipment in on Wednesday. As you will see in this first batch of photos of this phase, actual work has begun.

Making a quick start, the crews began working the same day on multiple parts the structure.

This is the section in which the roof had collapsed inward. The Foundation recently announced receipt of a $40,000 grant to replace the roof.

Although new focus has begun on the High School Structure, it didn’t take the attention away from the much awaited pool. The final concrete pour occurred for the zero entry end, the sides are being blocked and the pump house construction is underway.
