The Pickleball Sensation!

Although the sport was invented in the 1960’s, Pickleball has seen a meteoric rise in the last few years. The hybrid of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, Pickleball has captured the hearts of millions, and its growth shows no signs of slowing down, especially in Grantsville.

The newly formed Grantsville Pickleball Club began with a few summer players and has quickly grown into the need for scheduling another night to play and multiple events on the court.

As the cold months of winter approach, the diehard Pickleball people weren’t willing to give up their love of the game because of cold temps.

“We are excited about our winter home!” Said Clayton Barnhart on a recent social media post where he shared that The Grantsville pickleball club will be playing at the NYA building on Rt 7. (Former BFG Factory Building). After cleaning and preparing the courts, the teams are set to meet at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays with more players welcome.

As the sport moves indoors, the outdoor venue just got a new robe of pavement applied by Brown Asphalt from Parkersburg. With funding from donations and the Calhoun County Commission, the court was resurfaced this week, adding to not only to the aesthetics of the park, but offering Tennis and Pickleball players the opportunity to play on a smooth surface with less risk of injury.

Although the greatest expense was the pavement, there are still financial needs to complete the courts and other projects at the park. To contribute, please make checks to the Grantsville River Recreation Park, c/o Grantsville Pickleball Club, P.O. Box 276, Grantsville, WV 26147
