“This is Our Town!” – City Council Improvements bring Ownership back in Style

Grantsville’s Town Council met Monday, August 7th, 2023 for their regularly scheduled meeting. Following the preliminaries of the opening, members of the newly formed Pickle Ball Club addressed the Mayor regarding the work being done at the Grantsville Recreational River Park. Roger Jarvis and multiple others have been preparing for the new court, telling the Mayor that the costs of the paint needed would be $2,000-$4,000 and they’d already had a  $500 pledge. Mayor Robert Petrovsky informed them that once the asphalt was down it had to cure for a minimum of 2-3 weeks before any paint can go on, and that Tim and Marcus Davis had agreed to paint the lines. The Mayor is meeting with Sisters of St. Joseph today in hopes of getting additional funding for renovations on the park.

Council Members Linda Staten and Cheryl Strums have collected $1,400 in donation. The Mayor noted how wonderful it was that the community was taking a part in the park’s renewal. He had replaced the Tether Ball game, Volleyball net and is planning on installing a new horseshoe pit. Two new picnic tables have been placed in the pavilion with grills and a stage as future possibilities. A dog bag dispenser has been installed in hopes of keeping the park clean for children. There are also larger plans for a block building to house restrooms, the fencing will come. The Mayor also mentioned that flea marketers are welcome to use the park for selling so long as they’re in a place not to interfere with the playgrounds.

The city streets continue to be not only an eyesore, but an inconvenience for those who travel on them each day. Many of the streets in town are owned by the State and have not seen pavement since the 90’s.

A rental agreement between Mt. Zion PSD/Pleasant Hill PSD and the Town was passed by Town Counsel. Apparently the “struggling” PSD’s have a spare $650.00  a month to pay the town of Grantsville for an office space. The Mayor was pleased to oblige, being that it would help reduce the hardship on the City for what they paid in tank rental fees to Pleasant Hill PSD’s. The contract was such that either entity could stop the rental with a 30 day notice.

Councilwoman Linda Staton informed the Mayor that the council had applied for $18,000 through the Sisters of st. Joseph charitable organization and are in the process of applying for 3 other grants in the amount of $20,000 each for Town Improvements. Ms. Staton encouraged the group saying “This is our town and hopefully the residents will join in. Myself and Cheryl have decided to do something each month to raise funding for the park effort.”  September the Town is hosting a kayak poker run. October a haunted house will be held in the City Building. November will bring cow bingo and a Basket Bingo in December. Any volunteers would be appreciated.

Under New business a resolution was signed to pursuit a grant through the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and the rental agreement between the PSD’s and city was signed. The meeting then went into executive session to discuss employment matters and following bill payment was adjourned.
