Friday night’s game in Elizabeth, WV opened on a somber note as the Wirt County team paid tribute to Dalton Joy, a Wirt County player that the community lost in a tragic car accident on on June 1, 2022. The team presented his family with his team jersey #7 and the community had a 7 second time of silence as well as prayer.
Calhoun’s first quarter didn’t start out well with a touch down for Wirt County on the board at the 11:27 time mark with many more to follow. Before the first quarter would end, two of Calhoun’s players were out, Hunter Thacker #10 with an ankle injury and and Haidon Staton #21 with a possible broken wrist taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Cheerleaders and fans alike cheered Calhoun’s boys on with a packed house of Calhoun supporters. It was a great turnout for the season’s first game.
Wirt County’s band did an excellent job providing halftime entertainment with two football players showing their multi level of skills by stepping up on instruments as well. The 50’s themed music and show was well done. Unfortunately Calhoun’s band did not appear.
While the Ridgeview News Publisher is far from a sports aficionado, and would not begin to understand the reasoning behind Calhoun’s great loss last night, certainly a deciding factor that likely attributed to it was the resignation of question by Head Coach Johnny Persinger just one day before the season opener. Principal David Gaul stepped in as Head Coach for last night’s game with assistance from coaching staff: Nathan Allison, Zack Yeager and Jeff Goodrich.
The final score of the game: Wirt County over Calhoun County 53-8 with Calhoun scoring a touch down and 2 point conversion in the last of the 4th quarter.
