Calhoun Control received word from Roane County at about 7 p.m. Saturday, January 15th, that one of their County Deputies was in pursuit of a silver vehicle traveling along Route 33 at speeds of 90-100 mph. The chase was initiated by Roane Deputy Wiley T. Raines, and joined by Calhoun Sheriff Warren Basnett, who was in the Arnoldsburg area at the time of pursuit. The perpetrator turned on to Route 16 South where the chase continued until doing a u-turn in a field in the vicinity of Crummies Creek road. At that point, Deputy Raines slid his vehicle into the ditch line and was unable to get out. Sheriff Basnett made sure Raines was okay and continued the chase, but lost sight of the silver vehicle further down the road.
Arriving on the scene to assist Deputy Raines was State Trooper E. Taylor, Calhoun Deputy CJ Myers and Calhoun EMS. While assisting the Deputy a 4 door green sedan nearly hit the ambulance, and in the process of leaving the scene nearly hit another vehicle in the area.
Deputy Myers requested the vehicle to stop and when they refused he hit and broke out the side passenger glass, but they continued to leave. Deputy Myers then went in pursuit, but lost the second vehicle as well. He did state that he knew the two individuals who were in the green sedan and he would be following up on the case and releasing additional information later.
Deputy Raines was not injured, nor did his vehicle sustain any damage. It did however need the assistance of Westfall’s Wrecker Service to be removed from the ditch.
Update:
Sgt. Weekley of the WV State Police located the green sedan in the 300 block of Crummies Creek Road on Sunday, January 16th, 2022.
