Fentanyl use on the rise
Calhoun Control received a 911 call at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, June 26th, 2022 of two unresponsive males on Stinson Road. Calhoun EMS and Minnie Hamilton Health System were both dispatched to a home where two males were found, one unresponsive but breathing was taken to CAMC Hospital for further care. The second male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Trooper J. Richards was the investigating officer who arrived on the scene of what was believed to be a double overdose. Following his investigation it was determined that an overdose of fentanyl was likely the incident cause.
The WV State Police would urge anyone with information about the trafficking of fentanyl in the area to call their Local state police detachment so the amount of incidents like this that happen in our community stay at the lowest possible.
The opioid crisis just keeps getting worse, in part because new types of drugs keep finding their way into the hands of people in our communities. Fentanyl, known as heroin’s synthetic cousin, is among the worst offenders.
It’s deadly because it’s so much stronger than heroin. The photograph above, which was taken at the New Hampshire State Police Forensic Laboratory, shows a lethal dose of heroin on the left, equivalent to about 30 milligrams; on the right is a 3-milligram dose of fentanyl, enough to kill an average-sized adult male.
This weekend was a reminder that Calhoun County, although we’re a distance away from the cities most notable for drug abuse, our families still face the same dangers.
