Hazel Ellen Cottrell Gandee, aged 91, was born February 27, 1933 in Oka, Calhoun County, WV and passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home on June 9, 2024, at Bear Fork, Roane Co., WV. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Hobert Lee and Ada Belle Duffield Cottrell.
As a child she attended the Cottrell School at Oka, and the Boggs’ Fork School in Roane County and was a graduate of Spencer High School. Hazel was a member of the Spencer Presbyterian Church, a devout Christian and formerly served the Spencer community in many volunteer capacities. She was a retired knitting supervisor from Kellwood Company, Spencer, WV, where she had worked for over thirty years. She was a devoted homemaker, home farmer, avid gardener, exquisite folk artist, talented quilter and longtime member of the Roane County Historical Society. In quiet times she enjoyed reading her Bible, working jigsaw, crossword, and word-search puzzles, or watching birds at the varied feeders.
Hazel is survived by her son-in-law, Carl Scott Barker and grandson, Carl Timothy Ross Barker, both of Bear Fork, Spencer, WV, two sisters, Linda L. Cottrell Liss (Frank) of Dunbar, WV and Brenda S. Cottrell Dorsey of Littleton, WV, sister-in-law, Lena Knapp Cottrell, Bear Fork, special niece, Jennifer D. Cottrell, Ripley, WV, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer L. Gandee Barker, two brothers, Rev. Herschel L. Cottrell and Lowell V. Cottrell and two sisters, Janice D. Cottrell and Mary R. Cottrell Nichols.
Arrangements: Per Hazel’s wishes, there will be no visitation or public funeral service and her body is to be cremated. An “In Remembrance Celebration of Life” will be scheduled for a later date.
