Phylis Emaline Deulley Hashman

Phylis Emaline (Deulley) Hashman of Chapel Rd, Gassaway, WV formerly of Mt. Zion, WV went home to be with the Lord on the morning of October 7, 2024, at the home of her daughter where she had resided for the last 6 months.

Phylis was born on March 4, 1935, near Normantown, WV. She was the youngest daughter of Oletta Mowery Deulley. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Cecil (Mary), Carlos (Deulley), and Val Gene (Dorothy) Deulley; her husband Darrill Hashman, and infant son Gary Lee Hashman.

Phylis was affectionately nicknamed as “Sally” by her late husband Darrill and the name was adopted by family and friends.

Phylis was a 1953 graduate of Normantown High School where she was voted as the best athlete, laziest, biggest pest, and class clown. On October 25, 1954, Phylis married the love of her life Darrill Hashman in Deep Creek, MD. They enjoyed each other for 56 years, 1 month, 3 days, 8 hours, and 10 minutes until his passing on November 28, 2010. Darrill was a Baptist minister, and she traveled with him as often as possible as he pastored churches in Ohio and West Virginia. She claims to have listened to over 450 of his sermons.

Phylis worked as a press operator at Peerless Laundry in Elyria, OH, for 68 cents an hour in the early 1950’s. She served as an auxiliary member and gift shop volunteer at Minnie Hamilton Health System in Grantsville, WV for 28 years. She was also active with the Mt Nebo Gospel Singing Convention serving in the Bookstore. In 2005, she was selected as the Calhoun County Belle representative for the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville, WV. She was a member of the Mt Carmel Baptist Church in Normantown, WV.

Phylis enjoyed reading her Bible, quilting, and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune until her eyesight failed her. She also enjoyed visiting with others and sharing her stories.

Surviving are children, Leon Hashman of Normantown, WV, Monica (Edwin) White of Perkins, WV, and Cindy Hashman of New Bern, NC. She was known as Mam-maw to grandchildren, Dallas (Nok) Hashman of Buckhannon, WV, Dillon (Jacqueline) Hashman of Glenville, WV, Heather (Kelland) Garland of Simpsonville, KY, and Amanda (Dennis) Fisher of Normantown, WV; great-grandchildren, Brianna Hashman of Buckhannon, WV, Elliette and Eden Hashman of Glenville, WV, and Emma, Ethan, and Addison Garland of Simpsonville, KY. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Norman “Sonny” Hashman of Elyria, OH as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family would like to thank special friends Wilda Jo Gerwig, Kenny and Pam Mohr, Susan McKenzie, WV Caring, and many other family and friends for the love, care, and support they generously lavished on Sally over the years and in her last days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Darrill Hashman Memorial Scholarship c/o Barb McKown Minnie Hamilton Health System 186 Hospital Drive Grantsville WV 26147.

A funeral service for Phylis will be held at 1 pm at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Normantown, WV on Thursday, October 10, 2024, with Elder Larry Fisher and Brother Henry Linden officiating.

Friends and family will be received for viewing on Wednesday evening from 5–8 pm at Roach Funeral Home in Gassaway, WV as well as from 12–1 pm prior to the funeral service on Thursday at the church.
Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.
