James Danny Self Sr., 84, of Sand Fork, WV; (Dusk Camp Community), departed this earthly life on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at the Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown, WV; following a sudden illness.
He was born October 5, 1941 in Dusk Camp, son of the late James H. and Velda (Hickman) Self.
Danny is a former employee of the Ford Motor Company, where he worked in industrial carpentry. He also worked construction and was a member of Local 984 Union Hall. In his spare time, Danny enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, woodworking, living the quiet life on Dusk Camp, and spending time with family and friends.
On November 9, 1959 Danny was united in marriage to Wanda (Goodrich) Self, who survives at their Dusk Camp home.
Surviving are 3 children, Vickie Penner of Tuscon, AZ; Deanna McVicker (Jason) of Sand Fork, and James Danny Self Jr. (Lauren) of Hillsville, VA; and a sister, Kathleen Thompson of Lumberport, WV.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Michaela Davis, Molly McVicker, Justin Self, Cristin Self, Karen Self, Brooke Bowser, Seth Penner, Hunter Self, Levi Self, Arabealla Self, and Annamoriah Payne, and 9 great-grandchildren, Gunner, Kaily, Nevaeh, Jeren, Kennydi, Ellia, River, Jackson, Alizabeth, and Lydia, and a host of great-great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, (James H. and Velda), Danny is preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Lee Self, grandson, Anderson Malachi Self, brothers, Charles Dennis Self and James H. Self Jr., sisters, infant Carolyn Self and Dolly Ann Waggy, son-in-law, Edgar Penner, and daughter-in-law, Amy Self.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV 26351 at 1:00 PM; Tuesday, July 7, 2026 with Pastor David Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the Self Family Cemetery on Turkey Fork. Friends will be received from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM; Tuesday at the mortuary in Glenville.
