Charles Henry “Chick” Stump, 77, of Big Run, Calhoun County, West Virginia, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on December 20, 1948, on Big Run in Calhoun County, Chick was the son of the late Warder E. Stump Jr. and Grace Haught. A lifelong resident of Big Run, he spent his 77 years surrounded by the community, family, and friends he held so dear.
Chick was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a faithful Christian. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Grantsville, where he faithfully served as a Deacon. His love for the Lord was an important part of his life, and his faith remained a source of strength throughout his journey. He valued his church family and found great joy in spending time with family and friends and watching his beloved Westerns.
Those who knew Chick will remember his kind heart, quick wit, and playful sense of humor. He had a special way of teasing those around him, always ready with a witty remark or a little good-natured picking. It was simply his way of showing affection, and his humor brought countless smiles and laughter to those fortunate enough to know him. Beneath that teasing spirit was a genuinely loving man who cared deeply for the people in his life.
Above all, Chick treasured his family. He shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patti, who loved him deeply and stood faithfully by his side through life’s many joys and challenges. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to love, commitment, and devotion. Through the years, Patti’s love for Chick remained unwavering, especially throughout his courageous battle with cancer. Together, they built a lifetime of memories and a family that meant the world to them both.
Chick was a loving father to his three sons, Brian, Todd, and Brad. Although his son Todd’s time on earth was brief, he forever remained a cherished part of their family. Chick took great pride in his family and found tremendous joy in watching his family grow and making memories with those he loved. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and the memories they shared with their Papaw will forever be cherished.
Chick is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Patti Stump; two sons, Brian Stump and his wife, Karla, and Brad Stump and his wife, Lisa; granddaughters, Darryen Porter and her husband, Lucas, Seanna Stump, Elleonna Stump, and Ashley Parrish; grandson, Hunter Dingess; step-granddaughter, Jessica Mills; and great-grandchildren, Knox and Krue Porter, Ayden Frame, Cohen and Gracie Slider, and Alex, Ava, and Aliyah Mills.
In addition to his parents, Chick was preceded in death by his infant son, Todd Stump; his sisters, Evelyn Fulks and Emily Gainer; and his brother, Rick Stump.
Though his family and friends will deeply feel his absence, they find comfort in the faith he carried throughout his life and the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. His legacy will live on through the love he shared, the laughter he brought, the lessons he taught, and the countless memories made with those who meant the most to him.
Chick will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the love he gave so freely, the laughter he inspired, and the special place he will forever hold in the hearts of his family and friends.
