Jim Hughes of Mt. Zion, WV filed for County Clerk in the fall General Election against incumbent Jean Simers. As an registered independent, he had until August 1, 2022 to file for office. In addition to paying the necessary fees for filing, Mr. Hughes will also be required to have the signatures of 1% of the number of voters in the 2018 election.
When asked why he decided to run, Mr. Hughes stated that there were more than a few factors that help make the decision. His wife Robin is retiring in July and he’d like to be closer to home, having worked out of county for many years. He further said that after watching the last few years of politics play out, and the result of the recent audit, he feels that there is room for more transparency in the office. Also, with the attitudes and actions of the Calhoun County Commission he hopes to make a difference with honesty, integrity and transparency. His final statement was that he wants to ”Give Jean some friendly competition.”
