Ballengee Appointed Interim Sheriff

A familiar face to the Courthouse and Calhoun County, and one that will not require training. It made perfect sense for the Calhoun County Commission to appoint Carl Ballengee, former Sheriff and Sheriff’s Deputy, when he offered his services to fill in as interim. Ballengee has 32 years experience in Law Enforcement.

The meeting to appoint the interim Sheriff began at 3:45 and was called for an adjournment within ten minutes, Likely one of the shortest Commission meetings in history. Carl Ballengee spoke for a few short seconds at the beginning of the meeting to inform the Commission that he would gladly fill in for the 30 days or less, until the new Sheriff was appointed. Commissioner Kevin Helmick made the motion, Commissioner Craig Arthur made a second, with Commissioner Walker’s vote making it unanimous. Following the adjournment, County Clerk Jean Simers performed the swearing in so that Ballengee would be ready to take temporary office at midnight on Sunday when Sheriff Warren Basnett’s resignation becomes effective.

The Calhoun County Commission will meet Monday, May 8th, 2023 at 9 a.m. and are hoping to have potential applicants ready to interview soon. So far Graham Knight and Nathan Allison have formally requested consideration.
