Calhoun County was one of eighteen school districts in West Virginia that participated in a pilot program with the GreenPower Motor Company’s Electric buses. The study was done to determine how buses performed in the mountainous areas of West Virginia and the varying weather conditions. Where the average cost of diesel fuel for a bus would be approximately $900 a month, the electric bus had a reported cost of $200.00 a month in Boone County according to the GreenPower Motor Company.
The GreenPower Motor Company is presenting the results from the electric bus pilot program in West Virginia this week at the School Transportation News Expo. Barry Miller was interviewed by WCHS News for his part in the program. Miller, who drives bus for Calhoun County Schools, participated in the program. At first a skeptic, Miller ended the program being impressed with the buses performance and giving it a grade of A+ on its operation on Calhoun’s roads. He also believes that the bus will provide students a safer ride.
Barry Miller is attending the largest school bus convention in the nation, traveling to Reno, Nevada to attend STN EXPO.
