On Saturday, October 21st, 2023 the Calhoun Composite Squadron traveled to Charleston, WV for the 2023 WV Wing Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Conference where Cadets and Senior Members spent the day listening to State leadership and Military speakers encourage youth and adults alike to become the best Wings and representatives for their community.
The Calhoun Composite Squadron meets on Tuesday’s at 6 p.m. in Grantsville where Cadet training and mentoring offers youth the opportunity to rise in rank and become an asset to their community by providing assistance in times of community and State matters of emergency and crisis.
During the Conference, youth from across the State were honored for their achievements and advancing of their education and skills in aviation and ground crew training. Cadet Kyle Norman represents his squadron as a member of the CAP Cadet Advisory Council and actively participated in Summer encampment.
2nd Lt. Shari Johnson and Granddaughter, Cadet Paityn Roberts, enjoy serving in the Civil Air Patrol together and rising up the ranks as they learn more about Aerospace, Operations training and self development.
Reported outcomes from youth involvement in the Civil Air Patrol are:
- 24,000 powered flights yearly
- LEADERSHIP skills for a diverse, democratic society
- AEROSPACE career explorations
- 97% of the Cadets say “CAP has been a turning point in my life.”
- 96% of the Cadets say “I’ve started to think more about my future because of CAP.”
- FITNESS and the lifelong habit of regular exercise
- 87% of Cadets report that “I do things at CAP I can’t do anywhere else.”
- CHARACTER for making good choices
- 82% of Cadets report “I earn As & Bs at school”
- 81% become interested in a military career.
- 76% become interested in an aviation career .
- 65% say “I am interested in a STEM career.”
