Calhoun County Marching Band Place in 3 Categories at Black Walnut Festival

Information from the CMHS Facebook page

The Calhoun Middle High School Marching band competed at the 68th Annual Black Walnut festival Band and Majorette Competition last Saturday 10-15-22. There were 6 bands in the category making Class C the largest category. Trophies were awarded to bands that scored 1st , 2nd , or 3rd In the categories of Percussion, Silks (colorguard), Field Commander, and Overall band in class.

The judges awarded the following awards for their efforts:

3rd place Field commander – Zenna Zwoll
2nd place Percussion
1st place Colorguard –

Once the fanfare is over, the directors of each band receive a break down of scores for all bands in all categories.

Although trophies were not awarded, it is clear that our feature twirlers Jaiden Francis and Emily Anderson were tied for 4th place Overall. This means that out of 9 bands with feature twirler contenders, our girls displayed above average grace and skill.

Furthermore the band narrowly missed third place in class C by 2.5 points. For most contenders, competitive band begins in 9th grade. Our band consists of mostly 7th and 8th grade musicians. It is exciting to see such a young group do so well against bands that are larger and older.

Judges and band directors who have watched our band compete at this festival in past years have gone out of their way to comment on the band’s improvements. All said and done, we have seen significant growth this year and we are very proud of our students!
