Calhoun County High School Football plays their opening game against the Wirt County Tigers this evening in the town of Elizabeth at 7 p.m. But the weekend is not only for Football, Calhoun Middle High School Volley Ball team will have their season opener playing a Quad at Ravenswood against Ravenswood, Sherman and Hannah.
An opportunity to meet players from all Calhoun Middle High School Fall Sports and Band students was held at the CMHS field on Thursday Night with a ”meet the team event,” as well as the Middle School Football Team season Scrimmage against Summersville.
One of the things Athletic Director Ernest Tingler has focused on since beginning his position this summer is building a strong support in the community for the school sports program. The meet the team and band was one such effort and allowed the community to help the school by donations of canned food and other items needed for the school store that is available for students at CMHS with clothing, toiletry and hygiene items free to students who need them.
Coming out of two years of Covid and low or no game attendance, building back the attendance and support of the home team has been slow. There were times in decades past where the community support was around the school whether or not they had youth involved in sports. But the community support has diminished for many reasons, not the least of which is the current gas prices. However, when possible the community is asked and encouraged to help in the rebuilding of the morale and team spirit by attending school events. There are multiple sports and ages that will have events several nights a week, offering the opportunity to pick a few to attend and cheer on the home teams.
