Alan Walker was the speaker at the SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) meeting down at the Mouth of the Elk.  The West Point graduate spoke about fixing the 5 bcf [billion cubic feet] gas leak from a storage well in the Aliso Canyon field near Los Angeles in 2015.  It took 111 days to stop the leak which was done by drilling a well to intersect the well below the damaged casing.  Boots & Coots did most of the work.  He noted that congressman Sherman said to “never waste a crisis”.  He listed those who helped and those who tried to impede the resolution of the problem.  He spoke of the “engineer” who showed up in a three piece suit and wingtips when everyone else was wearing fire resistant clothing and rain coats to deal with the droplets of crude that were falling from the sky.  He noted that if you had such a problem get to know the local lawmen and let them deal with those who were trying to cause problems.  He noted that the EPA man who had almost fallen in a hole by the well while “showing his badge” was removed and told not to ever come back.  The cost to the company was almost $1 billion to fix matters.  He also noted that in other states mineral owners are paid royalties from storage fields as more gas [and liquids] are removed that are injected.  In W. Va. The Rockefeller family companies made sure local folks were not treated fairly.  “Either you sign or we take it away from you.”
