Cross Placed in Grantsville Traffic Island

A cross, that began as a vision by a local Christian, who wanted to create a focal point in town for area residents to be reminded of the price Christ Jesus paid for the salvation of man and the privilege of being able to publicly worship in our Nation, now stands in the Grantsville traffic island.

The large cross was constructed by the Calhoun Gilmer Career Center and hauled and set by local Hope Gas staff. It was paid for by multiple anonymous donors, installed just in time to celebrate the Easter Holy Day.

A cross dedication will be held Sunday evening at 4 pm at the island, with everyone welcome to attend the short ceremony.

The public celebration is an appropriate response to the concerns raised over 40 years ago by the late Rev. Richard John Neuhaus in his book, The Naked Public Square. Neuhaus lamented that America’s public spaces had been stripped of any references to religion or religious practices—as if it were somehow ‘undemocratic’ or ‘uncivil’ to celebrate Christian holidays out in the open where others could bear witness. This is truer than ever in today’s increasingly secular environment. But people still have worries, fears, and troubles. Christians believe that Jesus offers the hope that helps us all to address and answer those concerns.
